Facts about Memory Foam Mattress and Latex
What is Latex?Latex is natural, biodegradable foam, that comes from the rubber tree predominantly found in the rain forest of South America. The material is tapped from the tree similar to way maple syrup. Then the tree recuperates for a few weeks and is ready for harvest. The outcome? Natural Latex foam.
What are the benefits of having Latex Foam in a mattress?Latex foam contours and moves with your body providing continuous orthopedic support and uninterrupted sleep for you and your partner. As the Latex forms to your body also balances your body weight throughout the entire sleeping surface relieving “pressure points” creating a more restful sleep. Another feature of Latex foam is “open cell” structure which allows the mattress to “breath”. This allows the release of body heat and moisture resulting in a cool and comfortable sleep surface.
Latex foam is naturally resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew, mites and other odor causing germs allergens many people are allergic to.
Latex foam also mattresses have a longer than usual life span and do not ever need to be flipped.
Natural Latex is a direct product from the rubber tree. In its natural form, it is soft and not very supportive. Most manufacturers do not use all natural latex for this reason.
Talalay Latex is derived from natural Latex undergoing a manufacturing process that enhances its capabilities to provide a stronger more supportive product. During this process, synthetic and natural latexes, soaps and rubber curing agents are mixed together and cooled with cold water in a stainless steel tank.
Visco Elastic Foam, also referred to as Memory Foam, is a man made foam originally developed by NASA to provide comfort for astronauts during travel. Visco has microscopic memory pockets that respond to your body’s temperature and weight creating the contour and memory effect.
What are the benefits of having Visco Elastic Foam in a mattress?Visco foam molds and contours to your body, evening out your bodies weight throughout the entire sleeping surface. When you move, the foam gradually moves back to its original position. This is where the term “Memory Foam” comes from.
Like Latex foam, the contouring effect distributes your body weight over the sleep surface and minimizes “pressure points”, thereby creating a more restful sleep. Pressure points can create discomfort and cause you to toss and turn more frequently.
Memory foam also features the “open cell” structure allowing the mattress to “breath”. Visco is also highly resistant to bacteria, mold, mildew, mites and other odor causing germs helping minimize allergies.
Visco foam also reduces motion transfer between you and your partner causing fewer disturbances from you and your partner giving you a quieter, deeper sleep.
Density varies anywhere from 3-5lb/ft cubed or higher. Less dense Visco beds are softer but have less “contouring” ability, and will not last as long. Because Visco is so costly and not supportive enough alone, most beds contain a Latex based support structure topped with a layer of Visco Memory Foam for comfort. Typically, layers will include 5” or more of Latex Foam topped with 3” or more of Visco Elastic Memory Foam and sometimes an inch or two of convoluted foam between the layers.
Visco Foam mattresses have a longer than usual life span and do not ever need to be flipped.
